There are a number of misconceptions about the deaf community. During the September SOLID Talk, we will provide you with the opportunity to learn more about deaf awareness and engage in a workshop.

Karyn Choi, a long-time member of the Dallas chapter of The SOLID Network, will facilitate this engaging discussion to educate about what it means to be deaf.  She will also provide pointers on interacting with deaf people, as well as introduce attendees to deaf culture.

This workshop will include a basic study in sign language.

NOTE: This talk is not woman-specific and is open to all genders.

ALSO:
September 19th is North Texas Giving Day! Funds donated will go directly to improve lives for many who would not have these opportunities otherwise. Please consider going online and making a tax deductable donation to either or both of these organizations!

karyn's Bio

Karyn was born in Korea adopted and moved to Alaska when she was four. She was then diagnosed as severely hearing impaired soon after. Karyn started school in the deaf program, but moved to Houston when she was eight and then mainstreamed. She earned her secondary education degree at Baylor University and oddly enough managed to find her first love/girlfriend there too. She later earned her her masters in library science at UNT and has worked at various libraries and companies before being hired by Dallas Public Library. All this time her hearing faded until she is now what's called profoundly deaf. Karyn does, however, love music, dancing, my fur babies, and of course her sweetheart.
